Backyard BBQ with Western Theme

What better way is there for a couple to announce that they're getting hitched than a Wild West theme party?

Get "Wanted" invitations for the Western theme party with a picture of the engaged couple and message of "Wanted - Your Attendance to Our Engagement Party."

Have a backyard barbecue for the event and include home-style favorites such as grilled hamburgers, baked beans, and potato salad.

Place checkered tablecloths on picnic tables and make sure you have bandanas, cowboy hats and other Wild West garb on hand. Get all your Western decorations and tableware NOW.

Have guests wear sheriff's badges with their names.

Create "Wanted" posters of the future bride and groom and place them around the venue citing their crime such as "Kissin' Bandits" or "for Stealing each other's Heart".

As for Western themed party favors my favorites include:

Couples Costume Theme

Ask your guests to come dressed in costume of their favorite married couples of the big screen, cartoons, from history, or the tabloid pages.

Have a blast trying to guess who they are.

I found a great Movie Clapboard invitation that can be customized perfectly for this theme by changing "Movie Night" to "Engagement Costume Party" and after "SHOWING" add the coupes name plus Engagement (i. e. Jack & Jill's Engagement).

On the back of the card add the following text: "Come in costume as your favorite couple on the big screen, TV, cartoons, history, etc.

If you are single, come as the same-sex part of your couple. Who knows you may meet your counter part at the party!"

Use Hollywood theme party supplies for your event and cater the event if you want the event feel more like the Oscars.

Then provide awards for the "scariest couple", "most romantic couple", "most novel couple" etc.

Cruise Ship Theme or the "Love Boat" Theme

Throw your engagement party on a river/lake/ocean dinner cruise. This is a nice intimate venue for close friends and families. Planning is simple as the meal is already included in the price.

Design invitations to look like passports to go along with the cruise ship theme.

Create a banner like the one shown above with the couple's name and "Engagement Party" so people know they have landed at the right place.

Purchase captain's hats pass them out to guests to get them into character for the cruise.

Cuisine Theme

Cuisine theme engagement parties are great. Just find out the favorite cuisine of the engaged couple and build a party around that theme.

I've provided examples of cuisine themed parties for both Asian and Mexican food.

Cuisine Theme - Asian

An Asian themed party is so much fun due to the rich colorful traditions of those cultures. You can decorate with anything from dragons to pagodas to hanging lanterns to elephants.

There are lots of Asisan themed invitations to choose from.

The party can be held at your favorite Asisan restuarant or at your home.

Who Knows the Bride? Who Knows the Groom? is a great ice-breaker for a party. It helps your guests learn more about your soon to be spouse. Tons of laughs.

Advice for the Newlyweds is a game where the guests pass on their best advice on to the soon be me newlyweds. The results from this game can be a memorable addition to the soon-to-be-wed scrapbook.

Newlywed Game puts the engaged couple in the hot seat to see if they REALLY know the person they are about to marry.

The Honey Do's Game will reveal who the Bride-to-be says is responsible for cleaning toilets once the happy couple merges? and who the Groom-to-be says that chore belongs to? Find out in this hysterical game as you try and guess how the Bride-to-be 'delegates' chores.

Honeymoon Destination Theme Party

If the engaged couple has decided on their honeymoon destination, it might be fun to throw a party geared towards their honeymoon destination.

If the couple cannot afford a honeymoon, it still might be fun to throw a party with their dream destination as the theme of their engagement party.

Honeymoon Destination Theme - Hawaii

In keeping with a Hawaiian Luau your invitations should be convey the feeling of Hawaii with images of a hula girl, hibiscus flowers, palm trees or beach sunset. Instruct guests to wear Hawaiian shirts or beach-themed attire for the event and bring a swimsuit if desired.

Give guests leis to welcome them to your party. For fun play Hawaiian music and have guest put on a grass skirt and attempt to dance the hula. Give prizes for the most authenic hula dance, the funniest, etc. If you want to win the in hula dance contest prepare by viewing the Basic Hula instructional DVD.

Some venues appropriate for a Hawaiian Luau themed engagement party might include:

• The beach if you live near the water
• At your favorite Tiki bar
• A pool party if either you or a friend has a swimming pool available
• At your home with lots of Hawaiian props to set the mood.

Honeymoon Destination Theme - Paris

Paris is such a romantic destination and who doesn't love French cuisine?

To keep with the theme, send out engagement invitations with the Eiffel Tower in the background (as shown above).

Some venues appropriate for a Parisian themed engagement party might include:

• Your favorite French restaurant if you want to keep things simple.
• At an Art museum especially if they have an exhibit of a famous French artist like Monet. Have the event catered with French appetizers / hors d'oeuvres.
• At your home with you cooking your favorite French recipes. Here are some of the best French recipes for a party provided by Food.com.

"How Sweet to be in Love" Dessert Theme

Not all parties have to include a dinner.

You can have a "How Sweet to be in Love" dessert theme party.

Your invitations can focus on "Sweet" or the "Love" portion of the theme.

I’ve found some lovely plates, napkins and cups with the "Love" theme (as shown above) with matching invitations.

For food, setup a table with a large variety of sweet treats.

Add a chocolate fountain to the center of the display. Surround the fountain with dipping items such as strawberries, cookies, and pretzels.

Serve champagne or sparkling cider (for your non-drinkers) and milk for the children.

Create a large poster with a picture of the engaged couple with a caption "How Sweet to be in Love" and the couples name.

Play your favorite romantic love songs of all time at your party.
